WPC Organisation Structure

The General Assembly (GA)

The General Assembly (GA) of WPC consists of all the members of the Governing Body, all organizational members at the grass-roots level, state level and at national level and all individual members at the grass roots level and individual level.

WPC currently has more than 900 organizational and individual members. General Assembly is required to meet once annually for completion of the following:

  1. Receive and approve Annual Report
  2. Outline future programmes and prioritize programmes accordingly
  3. Once every two years, elect the Governing Body and Office Bearers of the Society
  4. Review, approve and adopt (the) audited statement.
  5. Adopt or amend the rules and regulations of WPC, if required.

The Governing Body (GB)

The Governing Body (GB) is comprised of four office bearers and five regional representatives. It meets quarterly and is responsible for making all policy-related decisions, planning annual activities and planning budgets. It also ensures the effective management of the organization.

Dr Ranjana Kumari, President

Dr Ranjana Kumari is a prominent activist and widely regarded as a leading force in the women’s movement in India. Dr Kumari is the President of Women Power Connect (WPC) and is also Director of the Centre for Social Research (CSR); Coordinator of Joint Action Front for Women (JAFW) and has been senior advisor to the Ministry of Labor, Government of India, and Coordinator of the South Asian Forum for Women's Political Empowerment. Dr. Kumari has also been a member of the Task Force on Industrial Relations for The International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva. She has written several books, among them Brides Are Not for Burning and Women in Decision Making, and presented numerous papers in international and national forums. An activist in the women’s movement and an ardent supporter of reservation of seats for women in parliament, Dr. Kumari also is involved in research, advocacy, lobbying and training for the protection of women's human rights.

Dr Vibhuti Patel, Vice President

Dr. Vibhuti Patel is professor and head of the University Department of Economics, and Director, Department of Post Graduate Studies and Research of SNDT Women’s University,Mumbai and holds a Doctorate in Economics. She is a member of Board of Studies, Research and Recognition Committee for Social Sciences, Board of University Teaching and Research and Chairperson of Women Development Cell and Anti Ragging Committee, PGSR and Campus-in-Charge of SNDT Women’s University.
She is also a member of Expert Committee on School of Gandhian Thoughts and a member of Expert committee of School of Gender and Development Studies for Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU) and a member of Advisory Board of Department of Women’s Studies of National Council of Education, Research and Training NCERT, Delhi. She is a member of subgroup on Gender and Agriculture for the 11th Five Year Plan, the Planning Commission of India, GOI, Delhi.

Dr N. Hamsa, Executive Director

Dr N. Hamsa is trained in Sociology with PH.D from JNU and has worked for over 25 years on gender, labour, human resource, and issues with Council of Indian Employers and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Since 2002 she has been working on gender related issues and has been associated with WPC since its inception 2005.

Governing Body 2009-2011 Members

Ms Gouri Choudhury

Ms Gouri Choudhury is one of the founders of Action India, Saheli, Jagori, Shaktishalini, Dastakar and WPC. Action India is an organization working in urban slums and resettlement colonies since 1976. Gouri has been actively involved in mobilizing the community against sex selection through the grassroots network created by Action India and the wider civil society activists and intellectuals concerned about the declining child sex ratio in India at the national level and particularly in the NCT Delhi.

Ms Alice Garg

Ms Alice Garg actively works for child (special emphasis on the girl child) and women empowerment since 1972, confronting social evils, gender inequality and violence that are prejudicial to women’s self-reliance and development. She has participated in several national and international conference and seminars on child, women and human rights. Several awards State, National and International including Jamna Lal Bajaj award

Ms. Hasina Kharbhih

Ms Hasina Kharbhih, ASHOKA Fellow, Founder President and presently Team Leader Impulse NGO Network. She is also a Commonwealth Youth Ambassador for Positive Living, representing India. She has a management background. She is a trainer, specialized in the area of human rights, with special reference to human trafficking, life shills education, in context to HIV / AIDS, project management, organization strategies. She has been involved as a consultant and researcher, monitoring and evaluation, project formulation for a number of International agency and Project such as World Bank, Management System International Washington DC USA, South Asia Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF), SARI/Equity Good Practices Study a South Asian Program funded by USAID.. etc . She was also selected as an International Visitors Program NGO Management to United States.

Ms Anju Sinha

Ms Anju Sinha, is a Post Graguate in Zoology. She is associated with Gramin Evam Nagar Vikas Parishad since 1994. She is a life member of Bihar Council of Child Welfare, Bihar, Member of LDM Network and a Member of Common Health. She has 15 years experience of Women Rights, Child Rights, Dalit Rights, Sexual & Reproductive Health rights, Women Empowerment and Gender. She has been awarded state level Father James Tong Memorial for Best Health promoter in 1999.

Ms Indrani Sinha

Ms Indrani Sinha works for Sanlaap. Indrani’s career began with teaching English, in 1973-76, in a well-known Hindi-medium school in Calcutta, she soon realized that her interest lay in the development sector. In 1982, she joined Terre des Hommes, a network of ten national organizations working for the rights of children and to promote equitable development without racial, religious, political, cultural or gender-based discrimination and then moved on to the Oxfam India Trust, where she worked for five years in women’s empowerment.

Dr Celine Sunny

Dr Celine Sunny is a Masters in Sociology and Women Studies. She is the Director at Centre for Women Studies and Development in Kerala. Her areas of specialization are protection of women against Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking.

The Executive Committee (EC)

The Governing Body appoints an Executive Committee to assist it in coordination work. The Executive Committee meets monthly. Some of the roles and responsibilities of the EC are mentioned hereunder:

  • Preparation of the Society’s annual budget
  • Preparation of annual work plan of the Society
  • Ensuring the effective management of the Society
  • Be responsible for the overall vision and thrust of the Society

The WPC Secretariat

WPC’s Secretariat functions as the ground base of operations for WPC. Members of the secretariat work together to design and carry out programme schemes, carry out the lobbying initiatives of the Governing Body, organize and execute annual activities, manage accounts and information, produce WPC publications, meet and work with government agencies, and much more. The office of the Secretariat is the WPC Delhi headquarters and holds regular hours, Monday–Friday, 9.30am–5.30pm.

In addition to paid staff, the WPC Secretariat also employs the skills of temporary voluntary interns. The Secretariat’s internship programme is open to all students who are committed to human rights and social justice in India. WPC has worked with interns from the United Kingdom, the U.S., Europe and India.
