International Women’s day 2014 On 13th March 2014, WPC and CARE India came together to execute a standalone event to mark International Women’s Day 2014, looking especially at Violence against Women at home and at the work place. The event saw the presence of Ms. Shamina Shafiq, Member, National Commission for Women, Dr. Ranjana Kumari, Chairperson, WomenPowerConnect ,Mr. Kamal Sharma, Finance Head, CARE India and Ms. Gouri Choudhry, Governing Body Member, WomenPowerConnect, setting the ground for an intense, amusing and inspiring afternoon.
Ms. Madhubala Nath, Consultant, Formerly Senior Policy Advisor and Regional Director, UN Women, Ms. Kamla Bhasin, Advisor,Sangat – a South Asian Feminist Network, Ms. Amarjeet Kaur, General Secretary, All India Trade Union Congress and Ms. Julie Thekkudan, Lead Specialist, Gender Justice at Oxfam India took part in the panel discussion: Challenges and way forward in preventing violence against women and girls in urban spaces (including workplace).
Ms. Maya Krishna Rao, famous theatre personality performed her famous piece “Walk”, focused on the Nirbhaya Rape Case in Delhi; Magician Ishamudin Khan presented his magic show amusing the crowd with his magic tricks and subtly conveyed the message of gender inequality in India and the composer, musician and singer Mr. Ashish Dha kept the audience mesmerizing with some of his songs on women’s issues.
Ms. Bimlesh and Ms. Maya Gurung shared their experience of surviving violence and Alok Dixit and Ms. Sapna from Stop Acid Attack (SAA), Ms. Nayantara and Ms. Geeta, from Sakha Consulting Wings Pvt. Ltd presented how the work of SAA and Sakha Cabs aims at supporting women and preventing violence.
